| The source text is selected from Matt Ridley’s new book How Innovation Works. This recently published book takes many examples to reveal the true essence of innovation and encourages people to set up a new view of it,so it is of high value to translate it into Chinese. This translation practice report is just based on the translation of its first two chapters where some recent scientific technologies like steam engines, turbines and vaccines are introduced. The content is objective and accurate with many scientific terminologies. What’s more, there are a lot of logical relations in the source text.Logical relations can be divided into explicit logic and implicit logic.Explicit logical relations can be judged by certain conjunctions. However, for those sentences without any logic conjunctions, readers can receive logical relations through background knowledge or the context. In this case, these relations are called implicit logical relations.Judging by Text Typology Theory, this translation text belongs to the informative text. Therefore, the most important task here is to reproduce the whole content of the source text that readers can easily understand.Since a clear grasp of logical relations is a necessary part for understanding the content, this report focuses on how to make implicit logical relations explicit,so that target readers can have a thorough understanding of the source content. The report consists of five chapters.Chapter One mainly introduces the source text and the significance of this translation task.Chapter Two gives a retrospect of relevant work in the translation process.Chapter Three explains Text Typology Theory as the theoretical basis of this report, defines implicit logic in scientific texts, and expounds the significance of explicating implicit logical relations in their translation.Chapter Four is the case study,in which the translator gives a specific analysis of the expression of four representative relations by means of certain translation methods such as amplification,conversion,recasting,splitting-off,cutting,extension,explication,and so on.Four representative implicit logical relations selected from the source text are causal, adversative, conditional and contrast relations.Chapter Five is a summary of findings and limitations in this translation practice. |
