This report is based on the author’s simulated interpreting practice in the interpreting course during her postgraduate study, and the simulated materials come from the 2017 Nanning International Sister Cities Exchanges and Cooperation Seminar. The seminar is designated to promote the economic growth of tourism, medical care, science and technology and other fields, stimulate economic vitality, and strengthen economic cooperation among sister cities under the theme of New Drivers for Economic Growth.Based on Gile’s Effort Model theory, effort allocation problems in listening and analysis,note-taking,short-term memory,note-reading,and target-speech production in the two phases of Gile’s Effort Model were analyzed through case study. The author found that during the process of consecutive interpreting, the speaker’ strong accent and high-speed,the interpreter’s poor listening and analysis competence, disorganized and fragmented notes,short-term memory overload and incompetence in mastering the target-language all contributed to the decrease of interpretation quality. If the processing capacity requirements exceed the processing capacity available of the interpreter in one task,it will result in the imbalance of effort allocation. Thus, the interpreter will struggle to cope with it,and the quality of interpretation will decrease. In view of the problems caused by the imbalance of effort allocation in this simulated seminar interpreting, the author put forward corresponding strategies.Through this report on simulated seminar interpreting, the author has a better understanding of the guiding role of Gile’s Effort Model in consecutive interpreting. The author hopes to provide some inspiration and experience to interpreting learners and to provide useful references for international sister cities interpreting tasks and interpreting studies.
