Zhao Feng(1916-2001),born in Kaifeng,Henan,was a famous music educator,music theorist,and music activist in modern China.He devoted his life to the development of China’s music industry and made outstanding contributions in various fields such as professional music education,general music education,and social music education.This article will start from the late 1930 s to the beginning of the 21 st century,under the constantly changing social history background,to conduct a comprehensive study of Zhao Feng’s "popular" music education ideas and practical exploration throughout his life.Based on the tremendous changes of the times and society,Zhao Feng’s popular music education ideas and practical activities have shown different characteristics at different stages of development.Therefore,this article is divided into different historical stages to explore the development process and characteristics of Zhao Feng’s popular music education ideology and practice.The full text consists of four chapters.The first chapter studies Zhao Feng’s popular music education ideology and practical activities aimed at cultivating revolutionary music cadres from 1939 to 1949.Based on the special historical period of war,the purpose of Zhao Feng’s music education activities during this period was to cultivate the music cadres needed for the war.Through the use of popular music education methods,such as the establishment of music publications such as "New Music" and the establishment of the China Conservatory of Music in Chinese Hong Kong and the Singapore China Art Academy,revolutionary music songs and basic music knowledge were disseminated to the general public of workers,peasants,and soldiers,Effectively playing the role of music as a weapon in war.The second chapter studies Zhao Feng’s popular music education ideology and practical activities from1949 to 1966,with the aim of combining improvement and popularization.During this period,Zhao Feng,as the deputy dean of the Central Conservatory of Music,carried out music teaching activities with the policy of integrating Chinese and Western cultures in order to cultivate new socialist talents.He also organized practical activities such as music performances for teachers and students to improve the music literacy of the general public.The third chapter studies Zhao Feng’s popular music education ideology and practical activities from1978 to 1998,which aimed to promote the development of national music education.Since the new era of reform and opening up,Zhao Feng,as the Vice Chairman of the China Musicians Association and the Director of the National Art Education Committee,has promoted the development of national music education through on-site inspections of music education in ordinary schools,seminars on national music education reform,and the establishment of China Correspondence Conservatory of Music,achieving the goal of improving the cultural literacy of the entire nation’s music.The fourth chapter is a summary of Zhao Feng’s popular music education ideology and its practical characteristics.Zhao Feng’s popular music education ideology is reflected in various aspects such as implementing the education policies of the Party and the state,achieving specific teaching objectives,and implementing educational practices.The characteristics of Zhao Feng’s popular music education ideology and practice are mainly reflected in several aspects.Firstly,he always adheres to the Party’s education policy as the guidance;Secondly,advocating a teaching philosophy that combines Chinese and Western cultures;Thirdly,the educational philosophy of "educating people" and "learning skills" goes hand in hand.
