Dafeng Zhou, known as a famous music educator, folk music theorist, and opera musician, enjoys a good reputation in the contemporary music circle in China. His thought of national music education is the essence of his decades of music education career. This paper mainly focuses on Mr. Zhou's thought of national music education and his practice. By way of investigation and documentation analysis, it sorted out his thought of national music education and various efforts he made to put his ideas into practice. With more evidence to support his thought being digged out, the paper also made detailed analysis and objective comments on them. By doing so, the paper aims to provide reference for future Dafeng Zhou researchers and to enrich theories of research on music education in China.Mr. Zhou's thought of national music education features the human-based educational phylosophy and the "appreciation first"and"activity-centered" teaching method. His practice of music education including publishing periodics, running school, giving lectures and composing musical works etc., centers around his idea of music education, and always for the music education.This paper made comparison between the ideas put forward by Dafeng Zhou 60 years ago with the current top 10 ideas of music education in the compulsory education period and found that they are exactly the same. So his practice is still of important value in guiding the reform of music education. Mr. Zhou's thoughts and efforts feature a perfect combination of the theory and practice, integration of extravertedness and introvertedness, unity of systematicness and forward-looking, and the constant awareness of nationality and scientificaalness.Mr. Zhou's music thoughts and practice underlined the importance of music education in the qualification-oriented education and social development. It also carries forward the folk music culture, promote folk music education. Dafeng Zhou, as a model educator dedicated to music education, has made an important contribution to the development of national music education.
