Coping Skills For Expression Obstacles In Online Consecutive Interpreting

This is a report on the online consecutive interpreting of “The Australia-China Workshop: Panel on China-Australia Migratory Birds Agreement”,held on 20-21 June,2022.Experts expressed their opinions and introduced the protection status of wetlands and migratory birds at home and abroad at this conference.Based on the theory of Gile’s Effort Model,the interpreter analyzes the expression obstacles at the understanding stage and the expression stage,and puts forward interpreting skills such as amplification,division,combination,lexical conversion,syntactic conversion and inversion for the obstacles of unclear words,long and complex sentences,speaker redundancy,English verb nominalization,English-Chinese sentence pattern difference and discourse distribution difference in practice,to improve interpretation quality and help the interpreter allocate her energy successfully,based on which the interpretation report is produced.Through this interpretation practice,the interpreter has a deeper understanding of Gile’s Effort Model,and summarizes corresponding coping skills for the expression obstacles during the interpretation.It is hoped that this report will serve as a reference for interpreters who encounter similar expression obstacles and break down barriers to the protection of migratory birds and wetlands worldwide.
