| Since the onset of COVID-19 in 2019,it has had a huge impact on global politics, economy and trade.Anti-China forces in some Western countries continue to use the COVID-19 as an excuse to smear and suppress China and achieve their ulterior political goals. The thesis studies Covid-related texts from China Daily—China’s national agency under the framework of Functional Equivalence Theory,in order to promote the translation construction of publicity texts, optimize the country’s image in the international community, and improve a national capacity of translation. At present, the translation capacity has begun to be specially cultivated as a national capacity in China. The theoretical research on the level of publicity texts and the national translation ability is of great value to the change of the translation object, the deepening of the theme and the response to major practical problems. The thesis consists of five chapters. The first chapter introduces the background, significance, methodology and the structure of the thesis. The second chapter is about the literature review, which introduces related studies on Functional Equivalence Theory,C-E translation of COVID-19-related texts and translation and publicity capacity building during the epidemic period. The third chapter makes clear the theoretical framework of Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory, and its main concepts and development. In the fourth chapter, under the theoretical foundation of Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory, the thesis studies the C-E translation of COVID-related texts from China Daily. The COVID-19-related texts is analyzed in detail at lexical, syntactic and textual levels through using the translation strategies of literal translation, literal translation with annotation, free translation, conversion of active sentences to passive sentences, and the cohesion and coherence of the discourse. The final chapter draws a conclusion that consists of the major findings, limitations of the thesis and suggestions for future studies. As an important way to bring China towards the world, the C-E translation of COVID-19-related texts requires not only the understanding of the underlying information in the original text, but also rich background knowledge, and the flexible use of translation techniques to convey the information of the source language to the readers more accurately,so that people can communicate with the world more smoothly. The thesis is not only an extension of the application of Nida’s translation theory, but also a new practice of translating the COVID-19-related texts,The combination of Nida’s translation theory and translating the COVID-19-related texts not only accurately conveys Chinas policy information to the outside world, but also better promotes international communication and helps target readers get access to the same cultural perception as the original readers do. |
