The late Qing Dynasty was a time of significant changes in Chinese history.After the Opium Wars and the signing of a series of unequal treaties that humiliated the country and humiliated power,China opened its doors to the outside world.Many Europeans and Americans visited China for inspection and traveled for different purposes.They created much travel works to record the turbulent changes in the South of the Yangtze River in the late Qing Dynasty with their eyes and notes.Based on the relevant theories of iconography,iconography,post-colonialism,cultural geography and so on,this paper sorts out the appearance of the Jiangnan Region in the late Qing Dynasty according to the typical texts coming to China in this period,explores the relevant issues such as "why,what and how to write the image of Jiangnan" for the European and American visitors to China,and analyzes the cultural metaphor and value of the the image of Jiangnan.The full text is divided into three parts: introduction,text and conclusion.The introduction mainly defines the concepts of "European and American tourism works of the late Qing Dynasty" and "Jiangnan",sorts out the research status of the Chinese image and the image of Jiangnan in the works of European and American tourism of the late Qing Dynasty at home and abroad,and expounds the reasons for the topic selection and research significance of this paper.The first chapter starts from the historical and cultural context of the late Qing Dynasty.It analyzes the reasons for the formation of the image of Jiangnan in the eyes of Europeans and Americans.In the late Qing Dynasty from the perspective of cultural background and time background of Europeans and Americans with different identities who came to China in the late Qing Dynasty,the cultural motives and psychological roots of the Europeans and Americans who came to China,and from the perspective of the object Jiangnan,it analyzed the impact of the changes in the appearance of Jiangnan in the late Qing Dynasty and its influence on the writing about Jiangnan.The second chapter focuses on analyzing the uniqueness of different urban landscapes in the south of the Yangtze River,involving five cities: Ningbo,Suzhou,Hangzhou,Nanjing,and Shanghai.They are all representative cities in the Jiangnan area.The landscape features are both similar and unique.Summarizing the appearance of different cities,constructing a three-dimensional Jiangnan appearance from different perspectives,and then discussing different identities,different writing strategies,and different genders in Jiangnan from the perspective of missionaries,scholars in China,women,etc.The image map includes the religious features of Jiangnan,the water system culture that has been repeatedly spoken about,and the multiple aspects of women’s lives in Jiangnan.The third chapter discusses the representative characteristics of Jiangnan’s image from the perspective of narrative style and skills.On the one hand,it is a unique narrative style—image narrative.Together,they outline a Jiangnan map that can be infinitely perceived.On the other hand,starting from three writing modes: objective writing,subjective emotional expression,and "local chronicles" writing mode,it analyzes the representative characteristics of the image of Jiangnan under different writing skills.Finally,the Jiangnan style under the multi-dimensional counterpoint narrative is analyzed,and the unique side of the image of Jiangnan is highlighted in the counterpoint narrative at different levels.The fourth chapter explores the cultural metaphor and connotative value of the image of Jiangnan,analyzes the role of Jiangnan as an "intermediary" in the self-examination and reflection of Europe,America,and China,and the modernization enlightenment brought by the image of Jiangnan constructed by "others".First,summarize and generalize "the image of Jiangnan" in Europe and America in the late Qing Dynasty.Under the multiple writings of Europeans and Americans who came to China,Europe,America,and China have been formed a pluralistic circulation system.The value connotation contained in the image of Jiangnan was also revealed in the process of mutual dialogue and exchange,and a whole is outlined in this overall observation.A cultural panorama that belongs to a specific historical era.
