Textbooks are an important source of input for second language learners and their quality has a significant impact on their learning.Vocabulary has an important place in teaching and learning, and its recognition and comprehension are the most fundamental tasks in the language learning process. The study takes the vocabulary of the textbook "The Road to Success-Smoothly"(Books 1-2)as the object of study.Firstly,a detailed count of the number of vocabulary words and the number of recurrences of vocabulary words was conducted to understand the recurrence of vocabulary words in the textbook. Then 45 vocabulary words were selected from the vocabulary words according to the principle of stratified sampling, and the learners’ vocabulary acquisition was investigated through a vocabulary word questionnaire, and the data information of the questionnaire was statistically analysed using SPSS data analysis software to examine the correlation between vocabulary words with different recurrence frequencies and learners’ vocabulary acquisition. The specific findings are as follows: Firstly, the number of vocabulary words in a single lesson of the textbooks generally met the criteria proposed by Yang,D.F.(1997),with 75% of the texts having less than 30 vocabulary words in a single lesson.Secondly, the average recurrence rate of vocabulary in the two volumes is 13.59,which exceeds the minimum recurrence standard proposed by Nantion. In addition, the distribution of word recurrence levels is reasonable, with half of the words being recurred at a high frequency. However, there were still five words with zero recurrence, which we believe is related to the topic of the text and the level of vocabulary.Thirdly,in terms of learners’ vocabulary acquisition effectiveness, the words were acquired in descending order of high-frequency,medium-frequency and low-frequency words, and there was a positive correlation between word recall and learners’ phonological and semantic performance. However, there were also some cases where learners with high word recurrence rates did not acquire the vocabulary satisfactorily. The analysis revealed that recurrence intervals, frequency of use and the shape of the Chinese characters also affected vocabulary learning. Finally, the analysis and the learners’ feedback are combined to draw reflections and insights from three aspects: textbook development, teachers’ teaching and learners’ vocabulary learning. |
