The color sculptures in the Luohan Hall of Pingyao Shuanglin Temple are the outstanding representatives of Ming Dynasty color sculptures in Shanxi. This paper selects the colorful sculptures of Luohan Hall in Shuanglin Temple as the object of study, and through literature review and collation,on the basis of previous research and fieldwork, interprets the content of the surviving sculptures in the hall, analyzes the artistic characteristics of the colorful sculptures of Luohan Hall, and analyzes the aesthetic implications and stylistic causes of the colorful sculptures of Luohan Hall,in order to gain a deeper understanding of the characteristics of the colorful sculptures of Luohan Hall. The thesis is discussed in four main parts:The first part is an interpretation of the historical history of Shuanglin Temple and the content of the remains of the colorful sculptures in the Hall of Luohan, and a testimonial description of each statue in the Hall, based on fieldwork and relevant literature. The second part is an in-depth analysis of the space and levels of the colorful sculptures in the Hall of Luohan, the artistic characteristics of the statue of Guanyin Bodhisattva, and the artistic characteristics of the statue of the Eighteen Luohans. In terms of the space and levels of the colorful sculptures, the unique features of this layout are analyzed according to the spatial creation of the colorful sculptures in the Hall of Luohan, and their correlation with the Chinese garden creation and tomb opening;in terms of the artistic characteristics of the statue of Guanyin, the study is mainly carried out from three aspects: the characteristics of the face and dress, the characteristics of the hair style and the crown, and the characteristics of the backlight and the pedestal, and it is clear that the statue of Guanyin in the Hall of Luohan has secularized characteristics in terms of its shape and the backlight behind it.The artistic characteristics of the eighteen Luohan statues are studied in detail in terms of head shape and facial features, dress and ornamentation, and the eighteen Luohan statues not only follow the ritual of statue making but also have the style of the Ming Dynasty. The third part uses comparative analysis to compare the colorful sculptures of Luohan Hall in Shuanglin Temple with those in other areas of Shanxi, seeking the differences and commonalities between the sculptures, emphasizing the unique value of the colorful sculptures in Luohan Hall in Shuanglin Temple, and further analyzing the origin of the combination configuration of Guanyin and the eighteen Luohan in Luohan Hall. The fourth part is based on the analysis of the artistic characteristics of the colorful sculptures in Luohan Hall, and studies the aesthetic meaning and stylistic causes behind the colorful sculptures in Luohan Hall. The colorful sculptures of Luohan Hall are finely shaped and vivid, and all of them have the aesthetic characteristics of form and spirit, air and rhythm, emptiness and reality, image and meaning, which are rare artistic treasures among the Ming Dynasty colorful sculptures. The nineteen statues in the hall are the product of multiple cultures, and their formation is influenced by many factors, including the influence of Ming aesthetic style on the one hand, and the influence of Pingyao Buddhist culture on the other.
