Translation Strategies For The Infinitive Construction In Social Science Text Guided By Skopos Theory

The high-quality development of social economy requires high-quality talent.Every country is committed to cultivating individuals who are suitable for its economic development.Education is the basic means of training talent,and higher education is a critical component.Further study and research in higher education can help cultivate innovative talent,promote scientific and technological research and development,and enhance comprehensive national power,which contributes to social and economic development.Building Excellence in Higher Education describes the history of Singapore’s universities and the formation of its higher education system,exploring the decisive factors that have contributed to its success and the challenges it faces in the future development.This has the guiding and reference significance for how to train the high-quality talented individuals.This translation practice report selects three chapters of Building Excellence in Higher Education as the translation material,which contains many infinitive constructions.Considering that the infinitive construction can exert different functions according to the role it plays in sentences,this report categorizes infinitive constructions into five types based on their functions in sentences: subject,predicative,complement,attributive,and adverbial,and summarizes the translation strategies for each category.This translation practice report is divided into five chapters.Chapter one introduces the purpose and significance of this task.Chapter two describes the translation procedures,including the preparatory work before translation,the translation process and proofreading after translation.Chapter three explains the development of Skopos Theory,makes an introduction to the infinitive construction,and elaborates the applicability of Skopos Theory to the translation of the infinitive construction.Chapter four presents a case study in which the translator adopts different translation strategies to improve the accuracy and fluency of the infinitive construction translation under the guidance of Skopos Theory,depending on the different functions of the infinitive construction in the source text.Chapter five summarizes the findings and shortcomings that the translator achieved in this translation practice.
