A Report On E-C Translation Of Literature And Medicine In Nineteenth-Century Britain From Mary Shelley To George Eliot (Chapters 1,3 And 4)

The source language text for this translation practice was selected from chapters 1,3 and 4 of LITERATURE AND MEDICINE IN NINETEENTH-CENTURY BRITAIN From Mary Shelley to George Eliot.The interconnections between medicine and English literature from the nineteenth century and the interaction of medicine and literature from a human cultural perspective are outlined.The first chapter focuses on the introduction to romantic materialism,the third on the natural supernaturalism of Thomas Carlyle and Richard Owen,and the fourth on domestic medicine in Wuthering Heights.The three chapters use poetry as a medium to establish the relationship between literature and medicine.This text is a cross-disciplinary literary criticism text with a strong specialization.The text is more complex in style,containing literary poetry,medical texts and literary theory.First,the first,the third and the fourth chapters contain a large number of excerpts of poetry,mostly related to religion and medicine.Second,there are more medical-related expertise,such as anatomy.Thirdly,the text contains many literary theories.When translating,we should pay attention to the objectivity of literary theory,pay attention to logical rigor,and improve the readability of poetry translation,it is necessary to make the translation conform to the conventions of the target language and academic requirements of the target readers.These are the important and difficult points of this translation practice.This report provides a translation analysis of the original text based on the“Comprehension,Expression and Adaptation”(CEA)framework proposed by Li Changshuan(2020).In terms of comprehension,the author uses cultural and professional backgrounds to help understand medical terms and medical literature translation cross-texts;In terms of expression,passive sentences and long sentences caused by Europeanized Chinese are avoided and sentences are appropriately reorganized according to their meanings;In terms of adaptation,for language not conforming to Chinese expression habits and compound sentences,techniques such as adding,shifting word class and using idioms are adopted.Through this report,the author hopes to provide other translators with a reference to the translation process of medical literature texts,to help them better understand relevant translation strategies and methods,improve the scientificity and accuracy of the translation,and provide some reference for relevant text translation research.
