The book The Autism Job Club co-authored by Michael Bernick and Richard Holden, primarily focuses on building a better structure of employment for adults with autism. It addresses how adults with autism and their families and advocates can best approach their own employment searches. The translator undertook the translation of chapters three to five of the book from September 2022 to November2022.The report serves as a summary of the translation practice. The source text belongs to popular science text, with selected chapters focusing on the employment situation of individuals with autism, which contains some specialized vocabulary related to neuroscience, with strict wording and logical organization, reflecting its scientific, professional and precise characteristics. As a popular science book, the translation of source text should prioritize both accuracy and readability to facilitate a broader understanding of autism and raise awareness about employment for individuals with autism. However,Catford’s Translation Shifts Theory is aimed at achieving accurate information transmission at the expense of formal correspondence. This report, guided by the Category Shift Theory, analyzes the structure shifts, class shifts, and unit shifts based on the characteristics of the source text in the translation process.Specifically, the structure shifts involve the shifts between active voice and passive voice, affirmative sentences and negative sentences,as well as pre-attributes and post-attributes.The class shifts encompass the shifts between prepositions, nouns, adjectives, and verbs. The unit shift involves the shifts between words, phrases, sentences, and sentence groups. The translator hopes that the findings of this report can provide references for translators working in the field of popular science.
