| In the past three years,the outbreak of COVID-19 has had a great impact on the field of education,leading to online classes replacing offline classes as the main form of classes for students.Therefore,it is necessary to introduce the impact on the field of education in various countries during the epidemic.The source text of this translation report is excerpted from chapters 6,9,10 and 11 of the social science book Global Higher Education During COVID-19: Policy,Society,and Technology,published in September 2021.The source text describes the impact of the epidemic on education in Kenya,China and California,and also expounds some teaching inspirations during the epidemic.Social science texts are common non-literary texts that focus on the transference of the meaning rather than the formal correspondence,while Catford’s Translation Shifts Theory put emphasis on the equivalence of meaning through the shifts of linguistic forms.Thus in order to ensure the accuracy of information transmission and the acceptability of readers,this translation report uses Catford’s Translation Shifts Theory as a guide,and analyzes the applicability of this theory in social science text translation.Catford’s Translation Shifts Theory is mainly divided into category shifts and level shifts,and category shifts includes structure shifts,class shifts,unit shifts and intra-system shifts.Therefore,this report mainly expounds the guiding significance of these five shifts methods in social science text translation.This translation report mainly consists of five chapters.The first chapter introduces the source text,research significance and the structure of the report.The second chapter summarizes the whole translation process,including pre-task preparation,while-task translation and post-task modification.The third chapter gives a brief introduction to the theoretical basis of the thesis,mainly elaborates the origin and development of Catford’s Translation Shifts Theory.Moreover,this part describes the guiding significance of this theory to social science text translation.The fourth chapter is about case analysis,which analyzes the applicability of Catford’s Translation Shifts Theory in social science texts translation.The fifth chapter summarizes the research findings and limitations. |
