A Report On E-C Translation Of The Prospectus Of Virgin Orbit (Excerpt) Under The Guidance Of Skopos Theory

Prospectus is a written notice issued before the company goes public on the issue of the prospectus,which is an important legal document for equity financing.The research object of this thesis,the Prospectus of Virgin Orbit,is viewed as a legal text containing knowledge of legal,financial,aerospace and trade and there is extensive use of long and difficult sentences,passive sentences,charts and figures.The text is characterized by profound contents and professional terms,which is a challenge for the translator.This report is written by the author based on the prospectus submitted by Virgin Orbit in the process of listing on the NASDAQ Stock Exchange in 2021.According to Reiss’ s Text Typology Theory,prospectus is a combination of informative text and operative text.On the one hand,the text is characterized by frequent use of professional terms,professional language and strong logic.Therefore,translation should faithfully convey the information of the original text.On the other hand,investors are called upon to subscribe for the company’s shares.The translation should be able to arouse the required response.Therefore,the author chose Skopos theory as guidance in order to retain the information of the source text while making it acceptable to the readers of the target text.The translator combined Skopos Theory’s three principles,including “skopos rule”,“coherence principle” and “fidelity rule”,to analyze the language characteristics of the prospectus.By using Skopos Theory as the guiding theory,the obscure content in the prospectus are translated better,so that readers can better understand the original text and achieve the communicative purpose of the document.Through this translation practice,the translator feels that in the process of translating prospectus,Skopos rule is the highest translation guideline,and the application of translation methods such as omission,conversion,amplification,division and inversion can help achieve the purpose of translation.It proves that Skopos Theory has strong guiding significance for the translation of prospectus.The author hopes that the suggestions in this report will provide reference for the translation of such legal texts as prospectus.
