On Legal Translation From The Perspective Of Approach To Translation As Adaptation And Selection

In recent years, as Chinese enterprises develop rapidly, they are gradually eager to enter international market, so businesses and related government departments pay more attentions to the drafting and translation of files like prospectus. The research object of this thesis, XRS prospectus, is viewed as a legal file containing legal content and knowledge of trade and finance, which includes various terminologies about law, finance, security, trade, etc. Therefore, it remains a challenge for the translator to make the version professional, precise and accurate. The translator not only needs to consider how to choose word explanations conforming to the context, text style and type in the respect of terminology, but also should make the expression more official and precise. The thesis will offer important references for more prospectus translations by systematically summarizing the features, principles and regulations of this kind of translation.This thesis is based on Hu Gengshen’s approach to translation as adaptation and selection. It first explains the meaning of the theory, containing what adaptation and selection is in translation, why translators should adapt and select, and how to do it. Then, it analyzes how the theory is applied in translation practice on three aspects, namely terminology, syntax and text with XRS prospectus translation as an example.This thesis aims at better guiding and assisting translators specialized in legal translation, especially in prospectus translation, improving their translation activities and provide references for more prospectus translations.
