| With the globalization further developed in the international trade network, manufacturing industry is having an increasingly important role in China’s economic development, which brought about heavy demands for translation of manufacturing texts. However, for the translating of such texts, most of them are carried out by enterprises themselves by setting up a translating team. Most enterprises translate such texts individually and use the translations internally. There are no systematic and consistent translating solutions for manufacturing texts, and few enterprises carry out the translating under the guidance of translation theories. This report is based on the English-Chinese translation of a quality management text in manufacturing industry. The translator translated a quality management manual compiled by a famous auto manufacturing enterprise.Guided by the functional equivalence theory, the translator summarized translating difficulties of such texts and provided corresponding solutions, thus to provide experience and knowledge for people who engage in the English-Chinese translation or translation researches of such texts in the future.Through describing this translating task and after cases analysis, the following points can be concluded: When one translates a manufacturing text, attention should be paid to terminology specified in this industry, and a good knowledge about target language usage is required so as to create a translation facilitating Chinese manufacturers’ understanding. In English manufacturing texts,non-English words often appear in the source text.the reason is that knowledge and experience of manufacturing industry spreads across the whole world.A few advanced manufacturing economies have profound impacts in manufacturing language. To deal with this situation, supplementing and omitting methods can be taken;Manufacturing English text does not use complex words and expressions, however, when they are translated into Chinese, simple equivalent words do not work anymore. In this situation, extension meanings of such words turn out to be more suitable. |
