Listening Comprehension Obstacles And Coping Strategies In Chinese-English Consecutive Interpreting

Listening comprehension is the most basic part of the interpretation process.The ability to listen and comprehend is an important indicator of an interpreter’s professionalism.Both theoretical scholars and professional interpreters are paying more and more attention to the study of listening comprehension and are devoted to study how to improve the quality of interpreting by improving the listening comprehension skills.The Civil Law and Daily Life is a national open online course offered by Jinan University on MOOC,which focuses on legal topics.Civil law originates from life,and people’s life is closely related to civil law.It is a legal rule abstracted from daily life,a basic legal norm in the civil field,as well as a basic guideline for social life.With the continuous strengthening of China’s comprehensive national power,many foreign enterprises have been attracted to enter China.And the number of foreign-related legal disputes has also increased.The translation of Chinese law general courses is of great importance in contributing to the shaping of China’s international image of the rule of law.Through the simulated consecutive interpreting of Civil Law and Daily Life,this thesis focuses on listening comprehension obstacles and their coping strategies.Through practice,the obstacles affecting listening comprehension have been classified into three categories:high information density,complex discourse structure,and implicit information contained in the context.First of all,for high information density,the interpreter needs to expand and accumulate extra-linguistic knowledge,and analyze the four-word structure so as to understand its meaning.Secondly,the following strategies can be adopted to address discourse structure complexity: breaking syntactic difference through syntactic transformation,highlighting information level through discourse structure analysis,and logic explicitation through using discourse markers.Finally,for the implicit information contained in the context,paraphrasing can be used to reveal the implicit information of the intra-linguistic context,and shifting method can be used to effectively convey the implicit information of the extra-linguistic context.This consecutive interpreting practice has deepened the interpreter’s understanding of the types of listening comprehension obstacles for legal courses.The coping strategies for these obstacles are summarized in this thesis,which can also serve as a reference for other legal genre translation.
