Insufficient Listening Comprehension And Its Coping Strategies In English-Chinese Consecutive Interpreting

Listening comprehension is crucial to interpreting.Good listening comprehension helps interpreters to produce high quality of interpretation.However,insufficient listening comprehension is common in interpreting activities.If the interpreter’s listening comprehension is insufficient,the quality of the interpretation will be directly affected,and the effectiveness of the interpreting activity will be greatly reduced.Therefore,it is important for interpreters to minimize insufficient listening comprehension during interpreting activities.Based on the mock conference,the author discusses the causes and coping strategies of insufficient listening comprehension in English-Chinese consecutive interpreting.The author analyzes the main reasons for insufficient listening comprehension based on specific examples in the mock conference: difficulty in accent recognition,misjudgment of primary and secondary information,lack of topic knowledge and mechanical record of information.Among them,difficulty in accent recognition and misjudgment of primary and secondary information are the main reasons for insufficient listening comprehension of information,while the lack of topic knowledge and mechanical record of information are the main reasons for insufficient listening comprehension of logic.Besides,the author analyzes and evaluates the interpretation performance.Then,the author proposes coping strategies accordingly.To deal with insufficient listening comprehension of information caused by accent recognition difficulties,the author believes that interpreters should try to be familiar with the speaker’s accent before the interpreting activity and use the specific context during the activity.To deal with the misjudgment of primary and secondary information,the author suggests that the speaker’s intention should be analyzed and used before and during the interpreting activity to help determine the primary and secondary information.To deal with insufficient listening comprehension of logic caused by a lack of subject knowledge,the author believes that the method of pre-interpretation preparation should be optimized to understand important concepts.To deal with insufficient listening comprehension of logic caused by mechanical record of information,the author believes that the note-taking strategy should be improved and logic should be highlighted in the notes.The author hopes that the analysis of the case study can provide some reference for English-Chinese consecutive interpreting and help other interpreters to improve their listening comprehension skills so as to provide better interpreting services.
