| PACE model is a grammar teaching model proposed by Adair-Hauck and Donato in 1994.It emphasizes grammar teaching should be conducted in the meaning-form-use order and that the last stage lays foundation for the next stage and that each stage is closely related to each other.Also,it conforms to the proposals of National English Curriculum Standards for Junior High School(2022)for grammar teaching.However,a certain aspect of grammar is laid stress on excessively in the actual grammar teaching,making it less possible for students to develop their grammar ability in balance.Based on this,the thesis is to explore how to apply PACE model to junior high school English grammar teaching with focus on two research questions:(1)What effects does English grammar teaching based on PACE model have on junior high school students’ grammar ability?(2)How can junior high school English grammar teaching based on PACE model be applied effectively?To answer the above research questions,two rounds of action research were conducted among 91 students from two parallel classes of Grade seven in a secondary school in Guangzhou in a duration of 12 weeks.During this period,participants took part in two grammar ability tests and two interviews.The researcher wrote teaching journals three times.This researcher collected the results of tests,interviews,teaching journals and carried out qualitative and quantitative data analysis.The following conclusions are drawn:(1)English grammar teaching based on PACE model makes positive differences to the development of students’ grammar ability and also exerted a positive impact on grammar form,grammar meaning and grammar use.(2)In presentation based on input hypothesis,situation creation should ensure that topic situation could enhance students’ interest and improve class atmosphere.In attention,students were able to grasp the connection between grammar meaning and grammar form under the guidance of the teacher.In co-construction,students were able to produce target grammar rules through cooperation and negotiation between students and teachers,which is conducive to developing students’ individual ability.In extension,the output activities should be designed based on the same theme as the input activities and the teaching activities should be designed from the easier to the more advanced to help students consolidate grammar usage.According to the results of this research,the researcher puts forward the following suggestions for English grammar teaching based on PACE model.In grammar teaching based on PACE model,it ensures that students can understand the grammar meaning,grasp the relationship between meaning and form and master the use of grammar in context to improve the overall language ability. |
