A Survey On College Students’ Online English Learning Satisfaction In State-owned And Local-run Universities

The research on satisfaction was initially studied in the field of business.Then it was applied in education.As information technology is widely used in the field of education,online English learning gradually becomes an important learning method.Students’ satisfaction with online English learning can reflect their learning situation.Hence,this thesis investigates the current situation of college students’ online English learning satisfaction in state-owned and local-run universities and gives relevant suggestions,so as to provide some advice for improving college students’ online English learning effects.The subjects of the research are 489 college students from Guilin University in Guangxi.This study aims to investigate the current situation of college students’ online English learning satisfaction by questionnaire survey and interview.The questionnaire consists of six dimensions: platform quality,cognitive support,learning content,self-efficacy,perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use.The questionnaires of 489 samples were analyzed by SPSS 26.0.Then 8 students were interviewed after the questionnaire.This study aims to investigate three questions in total:(1)What is the general situation of students’ online English learning satisfaction in surveyed university?(2)Are there any differences in online English learning satisfaction in different genders and grades?(3)What are the problems existing in college students’ online English learning satisfaction and the causes of these problems in surveyed university?The results show that :(1)The overall situation of college students’ online English learning satisfaction in surveyed university is acceptable,but there are some aspects that need to improve.Among the six dimensions of the questionnaire,self-efficacy ranks the highest and platform quality gets the lowest score.(2)There are differences between genders and grades in some aspects.Male students are less satisfied with online English learning than female students in terms of cognitive support,learning content and self-efficacy.Besides,the freshmen are less satisfied with online English learning than the sophomores in the aspects of platform quality,learning content and perceived usefulness.(3)There are three existing problems:Firstly,students lack strong learning initiative of online English learning.Secondly,students don’t fully utilize the learning content,especially male students and the freshmen.Thirdly,male students are less satisfied with cognitive support compared with female students.And the main causes of the problems are summarized as follows:Firstly,imperfection of the design and functions of online learning platforms.Secondly,students’ lack of intrinsic motivations of online English learning.Thirdly,students’ poor command of English.Fourthly,freshman students’ lack of self-regulated learning ability.Fifthly,teachers’ lack of cognitive support.Lastly,students’ cognitive styles lead to gender differences.Based on the results,relevant suggestions are presented for online platforms,teachers and college students.For online platforms,they are suggested to: update the design and functions;modify and update learning resources.For teachers,they are suggested to: provide students with more cognitive support and cultivate students’ intrinsic learning motivation;improve teaching ability and promote students’ self-regulated learning ability;understand gender differences in cognitive styles and provide specific guidance;promote students’ self-efficacy towards online English learning.For college students,they are suggested to: improve self-regulated learning ability;promote self-efficacy towards online English learning.
