The Man in the Blue Robe is a novel with a turning point created by the famous Shaanxi writer Chen Zhongshi in 1985.Both in terms of ideological connotation and artistic exploration,it reflects the artistic characteristics of his creation tending towards maturity.Based on the background before and after the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the novel tells the story of the protagonist,Xu Shenxing, who was deeply influenced by feudal ethics since childhood and experienced the ups and downs of his life in the transition between the new and old times, and shows the tragic life of the old-style intellectuals. It is a good work to understand the social development and people’s life in the central Shaanxi plain before and after the founding of the People’s Republic of China, and to spread local culture. This translation practice report starts from the perspective of functional equivalence theory and takes the translation of The Man in the Blue Robe(excerpt)as the research object, analyzing cultural-loaded words, syntax, and discourse to solve the problems in translation.Cultural loaded words carry special cultural connotations, and this paper mainly analyzes them from the perspectives of material culture, social culture, and linguistic culture. In terms of syntax,it mainly analyzes the sentence structure of classical Chinese and the serial-verb verb sentences that express different logical relations. The discourse mainly analyzes dialogues and symbolic rhetoric. In response to the above translation difficulties, the author adopts transliteration with footnotes, free translation, literal translation with footnotes, and paraphrase to achieve equivalence in the translation of cultural loaded words; At the syntactic level, amplification and the syntactic linearity are used;At the discourse level, the strategy of simulating the character’s tone and reflecting the character’s relationship is adopted in dialogue, while literal translation and free translation are used in rhetoric to achieve equivalence. This Chinese-English translation practice report hopes to provide some reference for the practice of novel translation.
