With the significant enhancement of China’s comprehensive national strength, people’s living standards and spiritual needs are gradually improving. At the same time, more and more excellent foreign literary works have entered China,in which English novels occupy the prominent position.“Functional equivalence”,put forward by the U.S.translation theorist,Eugene Nida, argues that translation is the effective conversion of the original text into the target language.Meanwhile,it should produce the same impact on TL readers as it does on original ones. This is in line with the demands of literary translation. To a certain extent, the theory is of great help in translation practice of novels, conveying the original information more faithfully and efficiently. The materials selected for this translation practice are extracted from the historical novel Take My Hand by Dolen Perkins Valdez, which tell about the consequence of apartheid of black people in the United States in the 1970 s and is inspired by the real events that shocked the whole country. The physical infringement and racial discrimination against black people in American society reflected in this book seriously undermines their right to life and development, and serves as a warning to all countries in the world today. It also has profound practical significance for China to boost the cause of human rights development. In this report, the translator takes Nida’s equivalence theory as the guidance to analyze and explore how to accomplish functional equivalence in E-C translation of this moving historical novel from the aspects of lexis, syntax and style. On this basis, the thesis,by means of translation strategies and methods such as literal translation, free translation, and conversion, attempts to resolve the obstacles arising from the two languages’ disparity while reproducing the essence and features of the original text, and making the translation precise and smooth. In this way,the aesthetic creation style of the author can be retained, and meanwhile, the translator also summarizes certain translation methods and techniques.Through this translation practice and report writing, the translator’s theoretical knowledge and translation ability have been reinforced. The translator also wishes that this report can contribute reference to the coming translation of similar works.
