The Influence Of Urban Block Shape On The Vitality Of Catering Industry

China’s urbanization process is currently transitioning from a phase of rapid growth to a phase of high-quality development.The secret to attaining high-quality urban development is the scientific and effective use of urban space while fully using economic growth potential.Block is where urban dwellers do the majority of their production and living activities,and the thoughtful design of its physical and functional forms contributes significantly to enhancing the quality of urban space and fostering urban vibrancy.The catering business,as a significant sector of the urban economic system,has positively impacted the market,encouraged employment,raised living standards for citizens,and emerged as a driving force behind urban vitality.Exploring how urban block design affects the vitality of the catering industry is therefore crucial in the context of high-quality development for maximizing the effectiveness of urban space usage and releasing the full potential of economic development.This paper examines the spatial differentiation characteristics of the vitality of the catering industry and street form,using the main urban area of Jinan as an example,and explores the impact of street form on the vitality of the catering industry and its spatial heterogeneity by using geographical detectors and multi-scale geographical weighted regression model.The following are the key research findings:(1)The catering industry’s vitality is unevenly distributed throughout Jinan’s main urban region,with high concentrations in the south and low concentrations in the north,high concentrations in the east and low concentrations in the west,and high concentrations in the center and low concentrations in the periphery.The Yellow River’s profound impact on Jinan’s urban morphology and functional zoning,as well as the southern mountainous regions,as well as the realistic characteristics of the flow of socioeconomic factors to the key nodes in the process of market self-organization,are the main causes of this spatial pattern.Specifically,(1)the catering industry vitality in the main urban area of Jinan has formed a high vitality area centered on Hang Lung Plaza and Kuanhuanli Snack Street,and a secondary high vitality area centered on Julong Plaza,MIXC,Wanda Plaza and Harmony Plaza.(2)The vitality of traditional domestic cuisine and snack fast food in the catering industry is widely distributed,while the vitality of foreign international catering and leisure fashion catering is mainly concentrated in the central urban areas Affected by the narrow east-west spatial pattern of the old urban area,the vitality of the catering industry in the main urban area of Jinan presents a southeast northwest distribution pattern,and the spatial distribution direction of various types of catering outlets is significant.(2)In Jinan’s central metropolitan region,the blocks’ planar form,architectural form,and functional form all exhibit notable spatial differentiation characteristics.In particular,the block area in the center of the city is smaller and gradually rises toward the perimeter due to the density of road networks;the elongation rate of the western blocks is relatively low,and the plane shape is rather regular.The blocks along the Jiaoji Railway have a low shape rate;While the eastern part of the city’s block shape is relatively low in compactness,it is compact in the city’s core section.In terms of block architecture,the average number of floors exhibits a spatial pattern of high in the east and low in the west,as well as high in the south and low in the north,due to the extensive influence of urban development plan and height regulation of the style belt;With a higher block plot ratio and a smaller outside boundary,the city center and eastern portion of the main metropolitan area have high levels of land development and use;Building density in the block has a spatial distribution characteristic of high in the west and low in the east,as well as high in the north and low in the south,as a result of various land development patterns.The block has a distinct circle shape in terms of its functional form;it has a low center and a high perimeter in terms of its functional mixing degree;and it has high functional density areas that are spread in a stripe pattern from northwest to southeast.(3)Block area,roundness,compactness,average number of floors,building density,and functional blending are the core indicators of block form that affect the vitality of the catering industry.The mechanism of block form on the vitality of the catering industry has homogeneity and heterogeneity among different locations and dominant functional blocks.Specifically,the boundary space of residential functional blocks is the area with the highest number of activity groups and the highest frequency of interaction between residents and catering spaces.Therefore,the large and irregular layout of the block is a key factor in promoting the vitality of its catering industry.The block area has the strongest positive impact on the vitality of the catering industry in the administrative and public service functional areas,followed by the degree of functional mixing,and the positive impact of the average number of floors is relatively weak.The density of buildings has a positive and negative impact on the vitality of the catering industry in administrative and public service functional areas located in the city center and peripheral areas The interaction between large area low roundness compactness,large area high average number of floors,and high functional mixing high population density is an important factor in promoting the vitality of the catering industry in commercial and commercial functional areas.The reason is that irregularly shaped blocks can provide more public space,while large areas with high floors can accommodate more people,providing a superior consumer market for restaurants.The higher the degree of functional mixing,the more conducive it is to creating a diverse and dynamic spatial environment For mixed functional areas,in the central area of the city,the higher the degree of functional mixing and the closer to the commercial district,the higher the vitality of the catering industry in the blocks,while in other areas,the higher the degree of functional mixing and the farther away from the commercial district,the more vigorous the vitality of the catering industry in the blocks;The irregular block shape with high building density is beneficial for enhancing the vitality of the catering industry in the central area of the city,while the irregular block shape with low building density is a positive factor in creating the vitality of the catering industry in the peripheral areas of the city.(4)Through quantitative research and on-site inquiry,it was discovered that there are reasons that limit the vitality of the catering business in several neighborhoods of Jinan City from the standpoint of expanding it.For instance,certain closed blocks with regular forms restrict the flow of activity between the residential area and the surrounding area,lengthen inhabitants’ ineffective commute times,and increase the strain on surrounding roads;inadequate public service facilities and insufficient use of three dimensions;The quality of urban space has declined as a result of the high building density in constrained street areas,small amount of green space,and extreme noise pollution.Countermeasures and suggestions have been proposed to address the above issues: firstly,to develop irregular block forms and achieve sharing between blocks and cities;The second is to increase the average number of floors and the degree of functional mixing,promoting the efficient operation of the block;The third is to maintain a suitable density in the neighborhood and create a comfortable living atmosphere;Fourthly,fully leverage the driving role of residential and commercial functional zones in shaping the vitality of the regional catering industry.
