In the late Qing Dynasty,a large number of westerners came to China.In order to better communicate with Chinese,they have worked hard to learn Chinese,and compiled a large number of Chinese learning textbooks and Chinese research works,which are of great significance to the study of the history of Chinese teaching in the West.This thesis,A Collection of Chinese Proverbs(hereinafter referred to as Proverbs)compiled by William Scarborough,is taken as the research object,and on the basis of combing and integrating the corpus,its idiom collection,arrangement,presentation and idiom translation are described and analyzed in many aspects,aiming at exploring the experience and lessons of compiling the idiom teaching materials for westerners since the late Qing Dynasty,so as to provide reference for teaching Chinese idioms as a foreign language and compiling the teaching materials.This thesis is divided into seven parts:The first part: Introduction.Firstly,it expounds the reason and significance of the topic selection,secondly,it combs the history and present situation of Chinese studies of missionaries in China in the late Qing Dynasty from six angles: comprehensive research,special research and case study,and finally explains the research methods of this thesis.The second part: Introduction of the author and content of Proverbs.This chapter briefly introduces the life of the William Scarborough,the background,the purpose and the content of the writing of the Proverbs.The third part: Overview of idioms in Proverbs.This chapter focuses on the analysis of idioms from the following dimensions: First,quantitative.Based on the concepts of idioms,this chapter makes a comprehensive screening and classified statistics of Proverbs.The second is qualitative.By sorting out the different views on the definition and classification of idioms in academic circles,it is clear that "idioms" are regarded as generic concepts,including idioms,proverbs,idioms and two-part allegorical sayings.The third is description.This chapter analyzes the characteristics of idioms in Proverbs in quantity,structure and semantic types,so as to provide reference for the inclusion of idioms in Chinese teaching materials for foreigners.The fourth part: Research on the arrangement of Proverbs.This chapter analyzes the overall arrangement of Proverbs and the specific presentation of idioms,and finds that the overall arrangement of Proverbs is relatively complete,and idioms mainly adopt vocabulary and semantic field presentation.The fifth part: Study on the translation of idioms in Proverbs.This chapter studies the English translation of idioms in Proverbs,and analyzes the translation methods and problems of idioms.The author uses literal translation and the combination of literal translation and free translation to translate idioms,striving to be faithful to the original text,but there are inevitably some problems such as mistranslation,hard translation and lack of figurative meaning.The sixth part: Advantages and disadvantages of Proverbs and its enlightenment to the compilation and teaching of Chinese idioms as a foreign language.Firstly,this chapter compares Proverbs with Proverbs and Common Sayings from the Chinese in the same period,and analyzes the similarities and differences between two books in terms of idiom collection and idiom presentation.Secondly,in connection with the previous research on Proverbs,this paper analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of Proverbs in terms of idiom collection,overall arrangement and concrete presentation,idiom translation and so on.Finally,according to the analysis and research of Proverbs,some suggestions are put forward for the compilation and teaching of Chinese idioms as a foreign language.The seventh part: Conclusion.Explain the research value of Proverbs and point out the shortcomings of this thesis.Appendix: List all idioms in Proverbs in tabular form,so as to present the idioms in Proverbs more intuitively.
