In the late Qing Dynasty,American missionaries in China actively explored and achieved certain results in the field of Chinese textbook compilation and Chinese character teaching in order to better learn Chinese.Taking the Chinese textbooks compiled by American missionaries in China in the late Qing Dynasty as the research object, this paper focuses on the Chinese character teaching methods in the Chinese textbooks compiled by American missionaries in China in the late Qing Dynasty.Compared with the Chinese textbooks compiled by American missionaries in China in the same period,Easy Lessons in Chinese,A Course of Mandarin Lessons:Based on Idiom are the most typical Chinese Textbooks in the presentation of Chinese character teaching methods and have more research value. Therefore, this paper focuses on the research of Chinese character teaching methods by taking these two textbooks as examples. The first chapter is the introduction. This paper discusses the research origin, research significance, research status and research methods. At present, there is little research on the Chinese character teaching methods of Chinese textbooks compiled by American missionaries in late Qing Dynasty. At the same time,no relevant scholars have studied the teaching methods of Chinese characters by taking two Chinese textbooks,Easy Lessons in Chinese,A Course of Mandarin Lessons:Based on Idiom,as examples.Through this attempt, this paper hopes to provide new ideas for the study of Chinese character teaching methods in early Westerners and valuable experience for today’s teaching Chinese as a foreign language. The second chapter is an overview of Chinese textbooks compiled by American missionaries in late Qing Dynasty. This chapter introduces the brief introduction of the authors of the two textbooks,Easy Lessons in Chinese,A Course of Mandarin Lessons:Based on Idiom, and analyzes the background and main contents of the two Chinese textbooks. The third chapter is the teaching methods of Chinese characters in Chinese textbooks compiled by American missionaries in late Qing Dynasty. This chapter mainly focuses on the radical teaching method, ballad teaching method and centralized literacy method extracted from Easy Lessons in Chinese,A Course of Mandarin Lessons:Based on Idiom. This paper analyzes the American missionaries’ understanding of these three Chinese character teaching methods in the late Qing Dynasty, focuses on the specific embodiment of the three Chinese character teaching methods in the teaching materials, and evaluates the three Chinese character teaching methods. The fourth chapter is the Enlightenment of the Chinese character teaching methods in the Chinese textbooks compiled by American missionaries in the late Qing Dynasty to the current teaching of Chinese as a foreign language. For today’s teachers of Chinese as a foreign language, the specific enlightenment can be summarized as follows: in teaching Chinese as a foreign language,we should take radicals as the center of Chinese character teaching, pay attention to the application of ballads in Chinese character teaching, and introduce the centralized literacy method to Chinese character teaching. For today’s textbook writers, the specific enlightenment is that the textbook compilation should conform to the learning characteristics of Chinese learners, the textbook compilation should be positioned accurately, and the textbook compilation should introduce corresponding exercises in time. The fifth chapter is the conclusion, which mainly summarizes the research conclusions of this paper, and puts forward the shortcomings and prospects of this research.
