With the gradual deepening of cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries,ancient Chinese literature has entered the research field of many overseas scholars.The Cambridge History of Chinese Literature is an important achievement of overseas scholars in studying the history of ancient Chinese literature,and is regarded by Western sinology as the "most important masterpiece of Chinese literary history in the past decade".This book attempts to interpret ancient literature from the perspective of the "Other",achieving a new concept of literary history that distinguishes it from the study of traditional Chinese literary history.This article focuses on the discussion of Tang and Song poetry in the book,and combines it with other relevant sinological research achievements of the book’s compiler to explore the dissemination and acceptance of Tang and Song poetry abroad.On the basis of systematically organizing the relevant research results of "Cambridge History of Chinese Literature",Chapter One sorts out the development and evolution of the "Other" theory from its origin to the present.The ’other’ has been influenced by various disciplines in its development process and has different connotations in different contexts.The second chapter mainly focuses on the cultural history of Chinese studies in Cambridge History of Chinese Literature.In addition to understanding the connotation of the concept of cultural history of Chinese studies,it also restores the historical and cultural context from both horizontal and vertical aspects.Horizontally,it includes the influence of political,economic,literary ideas,material factors,etc.on the development of literature;Vertically,it includes: unique stages of literary history,technical factors,and treatment of "de classicalization".At the same time,attention is paid to the division of literati status in the book,while also focusing on the disadvantaged poets while taking into account the mainstream literati.In addition,the poets in the book often appear in group networks rather than individual forms.The third chapter discusses the "Cultural Tang Dynasty" written by Stephen Owen in the Cambridge History of Chinese Literature,and discusses the Tang poetry in the editor’s eyes in combination with his related works.Firstly,it is the staging and interpretation of Tang Dynasty literature at different stages.The book focuses more on showcasing the development of Tang Dynasty literature in stages,depicting how literary culture itself occurred and evolved.Secondly,it is an interpretation of the representative poets of the Tang Dynasty.The interpretation of representative poets in the book cannot be denied as enlightening,such as using the term "professional poet" to refer to Li Bai,which is a conclusion drawn from the analysis of the poet’s poetry;From the perspective of ordinary people,Du Fu restores poets from the position of saints to humans,but there are also issues of over interpretation and misreading in his interpretation.Finally,by comparing the works of poets selected in the Cambridge History of Chinese Literature and Stephen Owen’s related monographs with the history of traditional literature,it is found that the poems selected from overseas focus on the works that can interpret poets as individuals,but lack the collective level of connection with the country and society.The fundamental reason lies in the differences between Chinese and foreign cultural backgrounds.The fourth chapter analyzes the literary history of the Song Dynasty written by Lin Shunfu and Fu Junmai in the Cambridge History of Chinese Literature,and discusses the Song poetry in their eyes based on their relevant monographs.Firstly,it is the division of literary periods in the Song Dynasty,with the focus on the development of Neo Confucianism as the basis for division;Secondly,attention is paid to the influence of material factors on the development of literary history.Editors’ views on literary cultural historyImplementation has expanded new perspectives for the study of literary history;Finally,there is a discussion on representative poets such as Su Shi and Lu You.Ailanno compared the mentality of Su Shi’s poetry to a "mirror of the soul".When introducing the poet,he paid more attention to external factors.He provided a detailed introduction to Su Shi’s life,political experience,philosophical thoughts,etc.,based on which he cared about the poet’s literary characteristics and artistic contributions.Fu Junmai’s discourse on Lu You focuses on the poet’s change in poetic concepts,and the book explores Lu You’s discovery of a world filled with poetic materials.Compared to traditional Chinese literary history,the book’s discourse on these two poets is more speculative and philosophical.Chapter 5 explores the enrichment and deepening of the content of traditional Chinese literary history in the Cambridge History of Chinese Literature.The editors have conducted research on Tang and Song poetry from the perspective of the "Other",bringing some new perspectives and achievements,as well as new research methods,such as returning to historical context interpretation,text close reading research methods,and the combination of Western theory and Chinese literary history research.These are enlightening for the current research on the history of Chinese literature.
