Nowadays, with the widespread application of information technology in all walks of life, big data has played an increasingly important role, and exerted a pivotal impact on business operation, policy formulation as well as many other aspects.Through the rapid acquisition, processing, analysis and extraction of massive, diversified and valuable transactional data and interactive data,it can finally make optimization plans for the current operating model. Therefore, the author picked up the first chapter of the book Big Data Science & Analytics: A Hands-on Approach as the translation practice,so as to give a general introduction to big data.Chapter one of this book mainly introduces what big data is,its working principles as well as its applying fields, which can help us to know this emerging technology industry in a quick and comprehensive manner.Yet,there are still some term translations with inconformity and ambiguity in some texts of big data,so that the author has paid great attention to the term translation of big data. There are five chapters in this report.Chapter one introduces the background and significance of the translation project as well as the source text.Chapter two mainly elaborates domestic and international studies on equivalence theory, application of equivalence theory in S&T(scientific and technological)texts and domestic studies on English-Chinese translation of terminology.Chapter three shows the translation process through three steps,namely,pre-translation preparations,in-translation and post translation. In chapter four, the author summarizes five translation skills of terms of big data, and introduces Werner Koller’s equivalence theory as a guide. In addition, she also illustrates that the selection of appropriate translation skills should depend on the actual situation by means of case analysis.Chapter five concludes the main content of this report, reflects on problems that the author encountered in the translation process and gives solutions to them. The discussion of translation skills of terms in big data texts will be conducive to promoting exchanges and cooperation between China and foreign countries in the field of big data, and help people make better use of big data.
