A Report On The Translation Of Capitalism,Development And Empowerment Of Labour:A Heterodox Political Economy(Chapter Six)

Today globalization is facing the challenge of regression,and the economic conditions of different countries,both developed and developing economies,are not that good.Economists and policymakers are looking for brand new and effective development methods.Under this status quo,Professor Hartmut Elsenhans,who is also an economist,wrote the Capitalism,Development and Empowerment of Labour:A Heterodox Political.Starting from the perspective of empowerment of labour,Professor Elsenhans promotes economic growth triggered by much higher incomes,thus achieving a virtuous circle.This report is based on the translation process of Chapter Six of this book where Professor Elsenhans realized the urgency to reverse the underconsumptionist trend of today’s globalization,and,with figures on globalization as the starting point,introduced two models of globalization to explain the significance of rising mass incomes in combination with the international division of labor and the internal contradictions of capitalism.The translator aims to represent an in-depth analysis of the entire operating process of capitalism and help Chinese readers understand its current development trend in the western world.In other words,the main purpose of translating the original text is to deliver its information since this book is an informative text of political economy.Due to the author’s personal writing style and the differences between English and Chinese,it is necessary to adjust certain forms and structures of the source text to present an equivalent translation,which is inspired by functional equivalence theory proposed by Eugene A.Nida.The translation practice and case analysis of this report,therefore,are guided by this theory.The chapter of case analysis introduces the difficulties in achieving functional equivalence when translating the source text at lexical,syntactic and textual levels with specific ways to deal with these difficulties.At lexical level,equivalence can be achieved by adjusting the form of terms and transforming nouns and prepositions into other parts of speech;at syntactic level,equivalence can be achieved by rearranging sentence structure,clarifying tense and aspect and using four-character structure;At textual level,equivalence can be achieved by amplifying the original meaning and retaining or changing the cohesive and coherent devices.
