The translation material is excerpted from a popular medical science book called Food Fix first published in 2020,written by Mark Hyman, the New York Times bestselling author and physician. The author explains how food and agricultural policy has been corrupted by money and led to a global crisis—the spread of obesity and foodrelated chronic diseases, climate change, poverty, violence and education gaps.Food Fix is divided into 5 chapters with 17 sections. The translator selected the second chapter for translation practice, which mainly analyzes the health problems caused by ultraprocessed food in current food system. The author puts forward corresponding suggestions from aspects of personal diet, medical care system and corporate social responsibility to solve these problems. With Catford’s Translation Shift Theory as the theoretical framework, this translation practice report discusses the level and category shifts used by the translator while translating Food Fix.The level shifts covered in this report include the shift of singular and plural form, tenses and comparatives, and the category shifts include structure shifts, class shifts, and unit shifts. The translator discovered that when translating a popular medical science text like Food Fix,some appropriate translation skills can be applied to realize level shifts and category shifts, such as addition can be used to realize level shifts, and division, conversion, omission, inversion and addition can be applied to achieving category shifts. The translator expects that the translation methods and skills summarized will serve as a guide for the future translation of popular medical science texts and other texts from a similar field.
