Instances of Use of the United States Armed Forces abroad, produced by the Congressional Research Service(CRS),provides a brief introduction to U.S.military operations abroad in chronological order. The original text is an excerpt selecting the instances between 2010 and 2020 from the report, totaling approximately 12,000 English words, for which no Chinese translation has been found. The original text contains a large amount of terminology and frequent use of passive voice and complex sentences, which is a hindrance to a smooth translation. The translator analyzed the cases under the framework of “comprehension, expression and adaptation” proposed by Professor Li Changshuan, and looked for countermeasures against the difficulties encountered in aspects of comprehension, expression, and adaptation. She sought the help of the Internet and relevant books to remove the obstacles in understanding caused by the lack of background knowledge;maintained fluency in the translation by using appropriate collocation and turning passive voice into active form;when translating complex sentences, she adopted approaches such as reversing, inserting, cutting and recasting to optimize the translation with grammatical analysis as the core. This report is relevant to the understanding of U.S.military strategy, national defense and security, and international perspective in recent years. At the same time,by exploring the use of different translation techniques and the application of the CEA framework in the case study of translation practice, the authors expect to provide references for translators of the same type of texts and students writing their master’s degree reports on translation.
