| The selected text for this translation practice is the second chapter of Being and Belonging:Muslims in the United States Since 9·11,edited by Katherine Pratt Ewing,a professor of religion at Columbia University in the United States, and published by Russell Sage Foundation in 2008.The selected text can be classified as historical and cultural academic text, with concise language, plain and objective expression, scientific rigor, and is of academic significance for understanding the identity and social participation of Muslim American community after the September 11 Incident. The practice report is based on the three theoretical dimensions of translation manipulation theory: ideology, poetics and patronage. On the basis of grasping the characteristics of the source text, this paper puts forward some translation methods and skills, such as free translation, transformation, annotation, sentence structure adjustment and discourse style reproduction, focusing on typical translation examples at three levels: vocabulary, sentence and discourse,in order to reproduce the ideological content, poetic values and class standpoint of the original text.At the lexical level, translation practice should pay attention to literal translation, annotation and transformation to express the ideology in the original context. At the sentence level, attention should be paid to conveying the textual meaning and cultural meaning of the original sentence through the adjustment and transformation of sentence structure and the translation adjustment of passive sentences and attributive clauses, and reproducing the potential patronage factors, such as class, society and culture. At the textual level, attention should be paid to preserving the details of sentence patterns and wording of the source text,so as to achieve coherence and cohesion between texts, reproduce the textual style and ensure the poetic value of the source text after translation.Through the analysis of translation examples and subjective and objective evaluation, the report proves to a certain extent that translation manipulation theory is applicable to the Chinese translation practice of historical and cultural academic texts, and can reproduce the content and language expression effect of the source text in different dimensions. |
