This report is based on the translation practice of The Future of Electricity Retailing and How We Get There.The source text is a monograph written by Frank A.Wolak and Ian H.Hardman,which comprehensively introduces the current situation of electricity retail market,the dynamic pricing mechanism,and the deployment of smart meters and solar power generation in major countries in the world(United States,Australia,China,etc).This translation practice excerpts the fourth and fifth chapters of the source text,which consist of 19,232 words.The source text is a science and technology information text.In order to accurately convey the information,the translator applies the theory of functional equivalence to analyze the translation of electric power science and technology texts.In the process of translation,according to the differences between English and Chinese,the translator analyzes the difficulties in translation and proposes corresponding solutions.In terms of vocabulary,some words need to be converted into different parts of speech in translation.There are also many abbreviations in the source text,and the translator first verifies and restores the complete form,then adopts the literal translation method.For sub-technical words,the translator also adopts literal translation method.At the syntactic level,voice transformation is often used in passive sentences,compound sentences need to be translated by splitting and restructuring to clarify the logical relationship,and appositive clauses can be translated by omission.At the textual level,the source text has a strong logic,and the coherence of the text can be reflected through the addition of conjunctions and repetition in order to make the target language smooth and clear.The translator is guided by Nida’s functional equivalence theory to ensure translation quality and achieve equivalence at the lexical,syntactic and textual levels.This practice report aims to deeply understand the functional equivalence theory from the lexical,grammatical and textual levels by analyzing the text of this translation practice,and discuss the translation process of the text of electric power technology,hoping to provide a reference for translation in related fields.
