As China’s reform is at its crucial juncture,social contradictions become more prominent.The CPC Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core has made many speeches and instructions on this subject.The book Social Governance in the New Era introduces China’s new thoughts,concepts and strategies of social governance in great detail.The third chapter of this book is selected as the translation material,which mainly introduces China’s overall requirements in this field.This political text features a formal style,accurate wording and compact sentence patterns.Guided by Eugene A.Nida’s functional equivalence theory,the thesis analyzed the translation at lexical,syntactical and rhetorical levels.At the lexical level,conversion of part of speech,omission and amplification were adopted to deal with Chinese verbs,repeated words and obscure political terms respectively;At the syntactical level,converting the voice of sentences and adding subjects were used to cope with zero-subject sentences while combination was applied to deal with parallel sentences.And negation was used to cope with some difficult sentences;At the rhetorical level,retaining the original images,paraphrasing,conciseness,conversion of metaphor into simile plus sense and substitution were used to solve political metaphors and allusionsThe thesis aims to popularize China’s innovative ideas and measures on social governance to the world and help other countries gain a sound understanding of China’s social landscape.It also intends to provide useful translation skills and experience to the translation of similar political texts. |
