With the progress of China's opening up and reform, Chinese political texts have become the major sources for the outside world to learn about China. Given the significance of political text translations, the studies on Chinese-English political text translation are relatively scarce. This dissertation aims to analyze the Chinese-English translation of political texts from the perspective of interpersonal meaning within the framework of systemic functional linguistics and equivalence translation theory. The Report to 17th National Congress of Communist Party of China is used as the corpus in this dissertation. The author will compare the interpersonal meaning in the ST and the TT, analyze the resulting equivalence between the ST and the TT, and summarize the equivalent features of interpersonal meaning in the Chinese-English translation of political texts.Based on the comparison and analysis of mood, person systems and modality in both the ST and the TT, the dissertation concludes the following equivalent features of interpersonal meaning between the ST and the TT: (1) for mood, the declarative mood is of directional equivalence while the interrogative and the imperative structures are of natural equivalence; (2) for person system, the single form of first person pronouns and second person pronouns are of natural equivalence while the plural form of first person pronouns and third person pronouns are of directional equivalence; (3) for modality, the modal operator of"è¦"and"å¯ä»¥"is directional while"å¿…é¡»","应该"and"能够/能"are of natural equivalence. The conclusion indicates that the translators would reproduce the equivalents in order to transfer the same value of the ST into the TT.The current study has proved that the equivalence of interpersonal meaning in political texts is uniquely featured and helps translators decide a proper translation approach in political texts. It shed lights on the study and development of Pym's theory and political translation practice as well. It also broadens the application of interpersonal meaning of SFG. Owing to the language differences, the probe on the equivalent features of Chinese-English translation in this dissertation doesn't seem comprehensive. More corpora and other theoretical framework are helpful for the future and more specific study. |
