Entrusted by a pharmaceutical chemical company, the author undertook the task of Chinese-English translation of Cleaning Validation Report on Immunopotentiator X.The report is an integral part of the many certification materials required for the export of Immunopotentiator X,and its content involves the purpose, scope, items and implementation process of the equipment cleaning validation of Immunopotentiator X.The quality of the English translation of this report directly affects the smooth export of Immunopotentiator X,so,its importance is self-evident.The theory of functional equivalence was proposed by American translation expert Eugene A.Nida, which focuses on the target readers’ acceptance of the translation, that is,the response of the target readers to the translation should be as close as possible to the response of the original readers to the original text. The client of this translation task paid special attention to the acceptance of the translation of this validation report by target readers in drug importing countries, and hoped that the translation could satisfy the needs of the target readers to understand the information in the original text to the greatest extent. The claims of functional equivalence theory are highly consistent with the client’s expectations. In view of this, the author decided to use the theory of functional equivalence as a guide to explore effective techniques applicable to the Chinese-English translation of this medical text in order to maximize the functional equivalence between the original text and the translated text from information to style. This report begins with a description of the translation task from three perspectives:background, purpose, and significance. Then, the author briefly introduces the original text and analyzes its linguistic features, including lexical features, syntactic features, textual features, and stylistic features, before deciding on the best theoretical foundation and translation techniques. The translation process can be divided into three stages,namely,pre-translation preparations,while-translation process and post-translation editing.Under the guidance of functional equivalence theory, the author adopts specialization and zero translation at the lexical level,voice-conversion,amplification and restructuring at the syntactic level, amplification and substitution at the textual level, zero translation, linear translation and formal diction at the stylistic level for the purpose of achieving maximum functional equivalence between the source and target texts. It is hoped that this translation practice report can enrich the case analysis of translation of bio-pharmaceutical texts, provide translation research materials for medical production equipment cleaning validation report texts, and offer certain references for related translation research.
