| This report is based on my supervisor’s translation project, the Beijing Qianqiu Zhiye Book Distribution Company, entitled Bankers and Empire. In this paper, the translator takes the first chapter as research material, analyses the critical and difficult points in the course of translation, and puts forward some countermeasures.Bankers and Empire reconstructs the story of how Wall Street’s banks and financial institutions expanded to the Caribbean in the late 19 th century through the Great Depression.Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory requires that the most natural and appropriate language be used in translation. What’s more, the response of the target reader is equal to that of the original reader, and it can be used to assess the quality of the translated text. Therefore,in order to achieve functional equivalence of the target translation, from the perspective of equivalence,it is essential to explain the issues and solutions of translation in terms of lexical, syntax, discourse and style. This is done by attempting to achieve roughly the same reader response on both sides.Altogether, there are 27 examples of translation, which involve the use of a variety of translation techniques. In terms of vocabulary, the translator is mainly concerned with the following aspects: free translation, translation of English idioms, communication of speech, application of Chinese four-character structures, and search for equivalence.Based on the difference in syntax, the translator must rebuild the sentence structure, avoid the semantic ambiguity, translate the speech and modify the word order,so as to make the translation more fluent and readable. In accordance with the characteristics of coherence and coherence, the translator has solved a number of translation issues based on the context and target language, for example, the consistency of the sentence, the executive summary and the independent narrative, the indirectness of the conjunction and the addition of the conjunction. In writing style, the translator insisted on seeking a better communication function by conveying the original language’s literary quality, reproducing the author’s usage of rhetoric, and showing the unique use of the long and short sentences in turn. |
