The selected texts for this report are Chapters 7 and part of Chapters 8 of Entangled Life:How Fungi Make our Worlds,Change our Minds & Shape our Futures. The book, written by British biologist Merlin Sheldrake, reveals how these extraordinary creatures have changed human’s understanding of the earth and life itself by exploring the fungal world. This translation practice is guided by the Vinay and Darbelnet’s translation model, which consists of two main strategies: direct and oblique translation. The two strategies are further divided into seven “procedures”.Direct translation includes borrowing, calque and literal translation.Oblique translation includes transposition, modulation, equivalence and adaptation. This report introduces the practical application of transposition, modulation and adaptation under oblique translation in this translation practice based on specific cases and further illustrates the applicability of Vinay and Darbelnet’s model in English-Chinese translation practice. This report is divided into five chapters. The first chapter briefly introduces the background, significance and structure of the task. The second chapter includes an analysis of the source text and a description of the translation process. The third chapter describes the Vinay and Darbelnet’s model and its application in practice. The fourth chapter is case analysis, such as solving grammatical and semantic problems through transposition;adapting to the context through adaptation, and using abstract for concrete and negation in modulation to resolve translation difficulties and enhance the readability of the translated text. The last chapter summarizes the findings and limitations in the whole practice process.Through this translation practice, the translator has a deeper understanding of Vinay and Darbelnet’s model, and can flexibly use various translation methods under this model to solve problems. In addition, the translator hopes that this report can not only improve translation ability but provide some appropriate translation references for others.
