| This report is based on the translation practice.The translation material was selected from Chapters 1 to 4 of the famous economist Thomas Piketty’s book A Brief History of Equality.In this book,Thomas Piketty told the history of humanity’s march toward equality through crises,disasters,and setbacks,reviewed the turning point of the modern world and offered suggestions for future development,which is of great practical significance.After reading the book carefully,the translator found that there were a lot of long and complex English sentences in the source text,which brought the translator challenges in reading and translating.The long and complex English sentences are composed of multiple subject-verb structures or modifiers.The most typical feature is the comprehensive use of three categories of clauses,as well as the flexible use of various prepositional phrases and participle phrases,which makes the structure of long and complex sentences and the relationship between components diverse,bringing great challenges in English-Chinese translation.How to translate these long and complex English sentences accurately and smoothly into Chinese has become a prominent challenge in this translation practice.To translate long and complex sentences well,translators should have comprehensive ability.They need not only a good command of vocabulary,grammar,discourse and cultural knowledge,but also a strong ability of language organization.Translators need to learn to analyze the substructure of long and complex English sentences,exercise their logical thinking and language organization ability,constantly summarize and flexibly use various translation skills and methods,in order to improve the efficiency and quality of translation.The process of translating long and complex English sentences into Chinese is difficult and involves the application of many translation methods.In this practice,the author adopted six translation methods:Sequencing,Reversing(Partial Reversing and Complete Reversing),Dividing,Inserting,Embedding and Combination.The author explored the translation of long and complex English sentences based on personal translation practice,aiming to find the way to translate English long and complex sentences,provide translators with effective translation methods for reference. |
