| English extracurricular reading can be viewed as an important part in English reading instruction in high schools.Just as classroom work design,as a result, targeted English reading extra-curriculum work design plays a significant role in improving the quality of reading instructions and developing students’ key competencies in high schools. However, due to the phenomenon of attaching importance to classroom work design and ignoring reading work design in teaching practice,as well as inadequate research results in theory, many problems exist in the effective teaching design of English reading extra-curriculum work in high schools. Therefore, this paper is to discuss the problems of English reading extra-curriculum work design deeply in high schools, and meanwhile, the coping strategies can be put forward based on those problems. On the basis of Gardner’s Multiple Intelligence Theory and Production-oriented Approach proposed by Wen Qiufang, this paper takes six English teachers,103 high school students from grade one in Chengdu Shude Middle School as well as students’ reading extra-curriculum work from Unit 1 to Unit 6 of Book 2 and the first two units of Book 3,Grade 1(2019 edition)as research participants in the second term of 2022.By interview, questionnaire and sample analysis, two questions are attempted to be solved with the support of SPSS: 1.What are the problems of English reading extra-curriculum work design in high schools based on key competencies? 2.What are the teaching strategies to solve those problems, especially the problem of effectiveness?Combined with sample analysis, questionnaires and interviews, this paper finds that two main problems exist in English reading extra-curriculum work design in high schools: 1.In terms of types, consolidation and extension account for a large proportion, and preparation, writing as well as creation are involved occasionally. However, insufficient types of practice and cooperation exist in those work, lacking sufficient efficiency.2.It is insufficient to set communicative scenarios and use information technology, which affects the effectiveness of designing those work.3.The unified design mode is adopted in most of reading extra-curriculum work, and the assessments and feedback are relatively fixed, which is not conductive to developing students’ key competencies fully. In order to solve these problems, coping strategies are attempted to put forward in this paper: 1.Strategy of thematic meanings of units to constitute communicative scenarios.2.Strategy of hierarchical design to meet the needs of different students.3.Strategy of various types to develope key competencies.4.Strategy of information technology to improve efficiency.5.Strategy of multiple assessments to promote sense of participation and satisfaction. The results indicate that some limitations can be found in this study, but coping strategies above can solve the problems of English reading extra-curriculum work design in high schools to some extent, especially the problem of effectiveness. |
