The Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China has issued the National High School English Curriculum Standards(2017 Edition,Revised in 2020),which outlines more advanced demands for the teaching of high school English reading,emphasizing the comprehensive development of high school students’ core literacy in English,and promoting the enhancement of students’ overall language proficiency heavily relies on their comprehensive language application ability.Consequently,high school educators are required to possess fundamental teaching design skills,prepare lessons that align with the updated curriculum standards,and effectively select suitable teaching methodologies to achieve teaching objectives.However,some high school English reading classrooms in China still use traditional teaching models,which are difficult to adhere to the updated curriculum standards,so it is urgent to optimize the traditional English reading teaching form.Based on humanistic theory and backward design,this study analyzes 28 high school English reading teaching designs that have won provincial-level “Excellent Lesson”awards in the 2021 “Each teacher crafts a masterpiece,Each lesson led by a guiding teacher”(An activity focus on enabling each primary and secondary school teacher to conduct at least one excellent class with the help of information technology)in Shandong Province,using content analysis and comparative analysis methods,and explains the following questions:(1)What are the advantages of these excellent teaching designs?(2)What are the shortcomings of these excellent teaching designs?(3)How do these excellent teaching designs enlighten teachers in reading classes?Research has found that the advantages of excellent course teaching design mainly lie in:(1)in terms of teaching steps,it has the characteristics of completeness,timeliness,and effectiveness;in terms of students’ core literacy,teachers’ teaching design emphasizes guiding students to understand specific language knowledge in context in terms of language ability;in terms of cultural awareness,it infiltrates both Chinese and foreign excellent cultures and helps students form correct values;in terms of thinking qualities,it uses transfer and innovation activities such as discussion and debate to cultivate students’ logical,critical,and creative thinking;in terms of learning ability,it cultivates students to choose appropriate reading and learning methods such as skimming,scanning,and intensive reading,and improves their English learning ability;in terms of teaching activities,teachers attach importance to cooperative learning methods and improve students’ language learning and application abilities by designing a series of diverse,novel,comprehensive,and practical English learning activities;in terms of teaching evaluation,teachers’ teaching design also reflects the concept of “The Integrated Fusion of Teaching,Learning,and Assessment” to a certain extent,and guides students to become participants and collaborators in the evaluation activities,providing timely feedback and help based on students’ learning performance;in terms of teacher quality,teachers can use standardized language,authentic pronunciation and intonation,and reasonable speaking speed to efficiently complete teaching tasks.(2)The shortcomings of excellent course teaching design mainly lie in: in terms of core literacy language ability,the teaching design does not cover fully enough,and some teachers lack involvement in phonetics,grammar,and pragmatics knowledge;in terms of teaching activities,some teachers lack the design of practical application activities,and the gradient of teaching activities is not high enough;in terms of teaching evaluation,the evaluation method is narrow and monotonous,the language is scarce and lacks targeting;it ignores the importance of student self-evaluation.Based on the above conclusions,this study provides the following enlightening significance for teachers to design teaching activities in English reading classes:constructing complete and effective teaching steps,covering and implementing comprehensive core literacy,adding rich teaching activities with students as the main body,implementing the “integration of teaching and evaluation” in English classes,and continuously improving their own professional quality.
