With the rapid development of the new era,the cultivation of talents equipped with creative thinking and practical competence has become a focus in the modern society and a matching educational concept centering around English subject key competencies is put forward in a bid to correspond with it.Though the cultivation of English subject key competencies has been attached importance to in the field of English education,existing related studies are still in the early stage and more problems such as passive learning and superficial comprehension of the text in the traditional English reading classroom remain to be solved for lack of practical teaching experience.It is assumed that the implementation of critical reading teaching strategies intended to develop students' critical thinking ability is an effective means of enhancing English subject key competencies.Based on the deep learning theory and social constructivism theory,this paper theoretically claims the necessity of carrying out the critical reading teaching in senior high schools after consulting and analyzing the related research on critical reading and English subject key competencies at home and abroad.Selecting two normal classes of the author's school,designing concrete plans and adopting a series of methods such as questionnaire,interview,observation,testing and data analysis,the author conducts three rounds of action study lasting four months.Critical reading teaching strategies applied,the action study is aimed at answering two questions: Can critical reading teaching facilitate the cultivation of English subject key competencies efficiently? What are the effective critical reading teaching strategies aimed at promoting the cultivation of English subject key competencies?The findings of the interview,questionnaire and testing after the three rounds of action study show that the students' linguistic competence,cultural disposition,thinking quality and learning abilities can be significantly facilitated by carrying out critical reading teaching.This study confirms that the effective critical reading teaching strategies intended to promote the cultivation of English subject key competencies are as follows: Democratic and harmonious teaching atmosphere as well as enlightening,layered and comprehensive methods of asking questions is of great benefit to developing thinking quality;Real,true-to-life and meaningful reading text input offers the possibility of cultivating key competencies;The effective discussion and cooperation equipped with multi-dimension and multi-subject evaluation build a platform to cultivate key competencies;Emotional education which is to the point is the soul of critical reading teaching methodology,fostering cultural disposition.The action study verifies that English critical reading teaching strategies contribute to transforming the students' passive learning approach,motivating their enthusiasm for learning,developing the habit of active exploration and achieving better teaching effectiveness.This paper is expected to provide guidance for senior English reading teaching by offering critical reading teaching strategies which are likely to pave the way for the cultivation of English subject key competencies.
