Abstract/Summary:
This article is a report on the practice of English-Chinese translation. The source text is the third chapter of the book The Diffusion and Social Implications of MOOCs and provides a comprehensive comparative study on the dissemination of MOOCs in Europe and the United States,as well as their social impart in the two areas, respectively. It contains a large amount of professional terms, proper nouns, long and complex sentences, and multi-type clauses, highlighting its academic and specialized nature.Academic texts prioritize the conveyance of content, which aligns with the principles advocated by hermeneutic translation theory, such as understanding and interpreting the content,as well as the principle of faithfulness. Thus, based on the analysis of the characteristics of the source text,George Steiner’s hermeneutic theory was selected to guide the translation practice.Steiner’s theory divides the translation process into four steps, namely "trust","aggression","incorporation" and "restitution".The four steps complement each other in the whole process of translation, and none should be dispensed with.Based on this practice,it is believed that applying the fourfold motion translation method to the translation of academic texts can accurately convey the content of the source text and,to a certain extent, reproduce the style of the source text. This report focuses on the specific role of the fourfold motion translation method in the guidance of academic text translation practice.Firstly, based on the content of the source text and my personal experience, the translation value carried by the source text is analyzed so as to obtain "trust" from that.Secondly, from the perspective of the subsequent steps of "aggression","incorporation" and"restitution",through specific case analysis,I attempt to explore its guiding value in different dimensions such as morphology and syntax. Finally, the major findings as well as limitations and suggestions generated in the translation practice and study process have been summarized.
