A Translation Report On The Chinese Classical Biography Under The Guidance Of Steiner’s Hermeneutic Fourfold Translation Motion Theory

As a vital part of Chinese culture,traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)has attracted eyes of global people nowadays.As we all know,TCM has played an irreplaceable role in combating global Covid-19 pandemic.Therefore,it’s top priority to spread TCM culture and tell China’s true story to the world.Based on the C-E translation of the excerpts in Biography of Famous Physicians in China’s Past Dynasties,this translation report attempts to summarize the translation strategies and methods employed in translating the Chinese classical biography under the guidance of George Steiner’s Hermeneutic Fourfold Translation Motion Theory.Enjoying both historicity and literariness,the text is rich in plenty of historical and cultural information.By virtue of George Steiner’s Hermeneutic Fourfold Translation Motion Theory,namely trust,aggression,incorporation and restitution,the author tries to achieve the transfer between source language and target language by combining the analysis of specific translation examples.Based on the trust of the original text,the author boldly invades into the four-character words and syntax of the original text,mainly adopting translation strategy of free translation and translation method of restructuring,as a way to accurately grasp their original meanings.And then such translation strategies as domestication and foreignization are adopted to incorporate the meaning and form of the original text so as to absorb the culture of target language and keep the Chinese characteristic of source language.However,after the movement of aggression and incorporation in the above process,the culture and information of the original text will inevitably suffer loss,so the translator needs to properly “compensate” the whole text by translation methods of amplification and annotation.The author of the report has concluded that Steiner’s Hermeneutic Fourfold Translation Motion Theory is feasible to the translation of Chinese classical biography.The author also hopes that this translation report can provide useful guidance and reference for the later biographical translation studies.
