A Report On The Translation Of High-performance Bolting Technology For Offshore Oil And Natural Gas Operations(Chapter 2-3)from The Perspective Of The Fourfold Translation Motion Theory

With the advancement of drilling technology,abundant oil resources on the continental shelf have become readily available.The use of oil drilling equipment is crucial for the exploitation of oil resources;therefore,the translation of petroleum science and technology text is particularly important.This study selects the two chapters from the periodical HighPerformance Bolting Technology for Offshore Oil and Natural Gas Operations as the source text for the translation practice,the content of which covers the safety evaluation of the fasteners in the subsea drilling equipment.Its Chinese version allows domestic scholars to learn about the latest research achievements in the field of petroleum science and technology,and thus promoting the development and progress in this field in China.Based on the linguistic features of the original text,this study selects Steiner’s fourfold translation motion theory,namely trust,aggression,incorporation,and compensation,as the guidance for translation of petroleum science and technology text.Then the translation report summarizes the problems encountered in translation practice and their solutions,focusing on the analysis of typical cases on lexical,syntactical,and textual levels,with translation techniques combed and discussed.The report is completed in the above way with a view to provide reference for the translation of similar texts.The major findings are as follows: under the guidance of the fourfold translation motion theory,the translator ought to trust source text value and her competence before translation.In aggression and incorporation process,different translation techniques are adopted from lexical to textual level.On lexical level,literal translation is mainly used.On syntactical level,linear translation,addition,inversion,combination,and division are adopted regarding different syntactical structures.On textual level,attention should be paid to coherence and cohesion between sentences and within paragraph.In compensation process,the omitted information in source text should be compensated,and the original format should also be kept.
