Abstract/Summary:
Led by Professor Maragtas S.V.Amante,Dean of the School of Labor and Industrial Relations,University of the Philippines,a delegation of 16 students visited Guangxi University on May 8,2019.They had a meeting with leaders of International Exchange Department,International College and Business School of Guangxi University.The author had the honor to serve as an interpreter for the consecutive interpreting of meeting and has written this report on the interpreting practice.With the schema theory as the guiding principle,this report aims to analyze many factors that affect the quality of interpretation in the task and various problems encountered in the interpreting process.This report is divided into five parts.Chapter One is task description,introducing the background,source,content,and requirements of the task.Chapter Two is preparation description,including long-term preparation and short-term preparation.Long-term preparation includes language proficiency,interpretation skills and encyclopedic knowledge,while short-term preparation covers background information collection,pre-interpreting communication with the speakers,interpreter’s physical and mental adjustment,on-site preparation,and emergency plan.Chapter Three introduces the guiding theory,schema theory,which will be used at three levels in interpreting: language,content,and form.Chapter Four is case analysis,in which the author uses strategies such as amplification,omission and other skills to deal with such phenomena as incoherent sentences and repetition in the impromptu speech as well as English varieties.Finally,this paper summarizes the lessons learned from this interpreting task,as well as the importance of schema theory to the interpreting quality,with the hope to provide reference and guidance for future interpreting practice.
