This translation project is a translation of excerpts of Why Do People Hate America, written by Ziauddin Sardar and Merryl Wyn Davies. The book mainly tells the source of people’s hatred for America, the image of America in people’s mind, and people’s vision of how to transcend hatred and build a peaceful world. Many scholars have discussed the classification of text types, such as the text type theory developed by Peter Newmark.Newmark proposed three text types, namely expressive text, informative text and vocative text.More importantly,he creatively put forward two translation methods: semantic translation and communicative translation, which provides a guiding model for the translation of different text types. He pointed out that the core of expressive text is the author,so semantic translation should be adopted to convey the personality and characteristics of the original text and the author. For informative text and vocative text, the core of their function is authenticity and readers respectively,so communicative translation should be used to highlight the content of text and enhance the readability of the translation.According to Newmark’s classification, the source text embodies the characteristics of both expressive text and informative text. When dealing with this kind of text, the translator should not only pay attention to the accurate transmission of the original information, but also take into account the response of the target readers. Thus,it can be seen that the accuracy and readability of information are of great significance regarding to the translation strategies of expressive and informative texts. In the framework of semantic translation and communicative translation, this thesis explores the specific strategies to seek the accuracy and readability of the translation in the actual translation process,so as to make the translation accurate and conform to the expression of the target language. This thesis aims to provide references on translation strategies of expressive and informative texts for other translators, and may throw light on the translation of expressive and informative texts in actual English-Chinese translation.
