| This is a survey report on the teaching effectiveness of medical interpreting online training of GDUFS Medical Interpreting Workshop based on Kirkpatrick’s Evaluation Model.Given the sudden onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic, the spring semester of2020 was in the face of the largest online teaching activity in the history of Chinese higher education ever. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has also significantly increased the demand for medical interpreting. However, there are few empirical studies on the teaching effectiveness of medical interpreting online training at home and abroad. To find out how the online teaching effectiveness of GDUFS Medical Interpreting Workshop has been perceived, this survey report, based on Kirkpatrick’s Evaluation Model, which includes reaction, learning, behavior and result four levels, conducts a series of surveys, interviews and standardized examinations of the trainees concerned. The survey report aims at answering three research questions:(1)trainees’ overall evaluation of medical interpreting online training based on Kirkpatrick’s Evaluation Model;(2)the strengths and weaknesses of medical interpreting online training;and(3)methods to improve application and teaching quality of medical interpreting online training in the future.Via analysis of questionnaire,semi-structure interview and exam, the report comes to conclusion:(1)the trainees acknowledged the teaching effectiveness of medical interpreting online training: they show high satisfaction towards training;their translation ability and independent learning ability get improved after the training;they benefited dramatically from medical interpreting platforms and opportunities provided by the workshop. However, trainees’ motivation for subsequent medical interpreting learning decreased after the training due to various causes, including insufficient channels for medical interpreting online training, trainees are lack of practical application opportunities, and medical interpreting market favors interpreters who are major in medicine.(2)Medical interpreting online training boasts its flexibility and less disturbance compared with its offline counterpart. However, being plagued by network instability, equipment debugging and other factors, the effectiveness of medical interpreting online training exacerbated, ranging from trainees’ insufficient embodied cognition in a medical environment,to inadequate medical interpreting practical application opportunities, and untimely and inconvenient trainee-to-trainee and trainee-to-trainer communication. These findings echo with trainees’ perceived viewpoint in questionnaire: medical interpreting online teaching cannot completely replace offline teaching.(3)To improve the application and quality of medical interpreting online training in the future, organizers and trainers can first, introduce blended teaching & learning, including immersive virtual reality system and visual sensing platform into teaching and training;setting real-time discussion parts during teaching and collecting trainees’ weekly after-class feedback.Second, providing more platforms and opportunities for offline medical interpreting practices.Third, encourage more students to participate in TCM interpreting courses. In the post-pandemic era,in view of the universality of online teaching and interpreting training in colleges and universities,it is hoped that this empirical study can help further enhance the application and quality of medical interpreting online training by improving its teaching methods, and thus promote the development of research on medical interpreting online training. |
