The report delivered at the 19 th National Congress of the Communist Party of China pointed out that it is necessary to speed up the building of a sports power, with particular emphasis on the fundamental status of youth sports in sports. For teenagers, the learning of sports can hardly do without the professional sports knowledge. In recent years, the domestic book market has introduced a large number of children’s popular science books which convey a wealth of sports knowledge and create the fun of sports. However, there are few studies on the translation of children’s popular science books of sport. In view of this situation, this thesis focuses on the subject of children, popular science books and sports themes, then takes Le basket raconté aux enfants as the translation and research object for exploring the translation problems and translation methods of children’s popular science books of sport.Le basket raconté aux enfants is an encyclopedia of basketball for children. The introduction of professional basketball knowledge as well as a variety of interesting basketball culture to children, become apparently the intended purpose of the translation task.Besides, the translator should well understand the cognitive level and aesthetic taste of child-readers when translating.According to the skopos theory, the primary principle that determines any translation process is the skopos(purpose)of the translation, and the most important factor that affects the skopos of translation is the target reader. It is self-evident that skopos theory is instructive and meaningful to the translation of children’s popular science books of sport. This thesis is divided into four chapters. The first chapter is the introduction of this translation task, including the author, the main content of the original and the requirement of the initiator.Through the analysis of the text features,it summarizes four characteristics of children’s popular science books of sport: the professional, literary, popular and interesting.Regarding the problem of how the translator handles the source text information,in my opinion, what is most important when translating is to ensure the accuracy and interest of children’s popular science books of sport. The second chapter describes the translation preparation, the translation process, and the translation correction. For the preparation,it is necessary to read the parallel texts, and creating a glossary is helpful in simplifying the process of translation. The third chapter starts from skopos theory which involves the skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule. With specific examples and effective translation strategies, the author of this thesis discusses the translation of children’s popular science books of sport from the dimension of word, sentence and discourse, and carries out an analysis on the basketball terms, competition rules, training skills and so on.The last chapter deals with a summary of this translation practice.Based on the internship experience of HUPU Sports, the author analyzes the similarities and differences between sports news translation and sports children’s popular science books translation, which provides a divergent thinking about sports translation. |
