| Children popular science books for children nowadays are less popular than other sorts of books like comic books and novels or even the reference books.Furthermore,a lot of children popular science books are translated from other countries. However, the quality of translation is comparatively unsatisfactory, with a lot of inaccuracies in language rendering.Additionally,it is not uncommon to find the translated children books still maintain language features of the source text which will negatively influence children understanding of the target text. The reason for the inadequacies in children popular science is directly due to the misunderstandings of the nature of children popular science translation. And the cognitive features of children readers are not always emphasized by the translators, therefore, making the target texts less satisfactory. The German functionalist Skopos Theory studies the translation strategies from the perspective of the functions of the target text, therefore granting the translators more freedom in manipulating the target text in order to fit the new text into the target culture better. The translation strategies are actually based on the requirements of the translation action or the purpose of the translation. This theory offers a better theoretical framework for the translation of children popular science which requires more changes in the language in order to fit into the cognitive ability of the children readers. The Magic School Bus book series are one of the best sellers in children popular science book market. This thesis aims to compare the communicating effects of two different versions of the Magic School Bus.One is the Xie’s translation carried out by Xiehui in 2005.The other is the new translation inspired by the Skopos Theory. The new translation is carried out the author of this thesis.Children chosen in this research are from local primary schools fifth graders and graders. This thesis aims to figure out better strategies in translating popular science. |
