| The report was based on the translation of excerpts(chapters 1,4,5,and the short essays following the main body)from Conditions of Trust: Words on the Nuclear Power Accident.The book was written by Kageura Kyo,a professor at the Graduate School of the University of Tokyo.On March 11,2011,a major earthquake struck the Eastern Japan region,and then the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster occurred.At that time,Kageura became aware of the public’s growing distrust of science,scientists,experts,and then wrote this book.He cited various statements in official releases and media reports,and unfurled the logical analysis of the question,"How did scientists and experts lose the public trust? ".Kageura also made further discussions about how to restore trust in terms of the requirements on scientists and experts and the principles behind trust.The translating is difficult in three aspects: "frequent terminology and proper nouns ","long and complex sentences" and "the variety of the language expressions".During translating,the author mainly adopted the translation theory of "Faithfulness,Expressiveness,Closeness" proposed by Liu Chongde,a famous contemporary Chinese translator.Liu first proposed the translation theory of "Faithfulness,Expressiveness,Closeness" in 1979.In this theory,the meaning of "Faithfulness" mainly refers to "preserving the exact meaning of the original text","Expressiveness" mainly means "the translation should be smooth and easy to understand ",and "Closeness" is to emphasize that the translation should "reproduce the style of the original text".Liu’s theory also emphasizes the unity of style between the translation and the original work.Therefore,this theory is also more applicable to the translation of texts with complex and diverse styles.Given the advantages of the theory,the specific features of the source text,and the translating difficulties,the author decided to adopt the theory of "Faithfulness,Expressiveness,Closeness" in the translation practice.In the first chapter,the author gave a specific introduction on the translation practice.First of all,based on his own research during the preparation for the translation,the author introduced the information about the writer of the original work,the occasion to create it,and the background of its birth.In addition,the author explained what each part of the original work was mainly about.At the end of the chapter,the author analyzed the major translation difficulties during this practice.The second chapter focused on the translation theory of "Faithfulness,Expressiveness,Closeness",which played an important role in guiding this translation practice.The author firstly introduced the origin of the theory,and then expounded on its components and definition.The author then analyzed the applicability of the theory in the practice,in light of the translation difficulties mentioned earlier.In the third chapter,the author discussed the application of the "Faithfulness,Expressiveness,Closeness" theory by analyzing the examples from his own translation practice.In this part,the author analyzed the translation methods adopted in terms of "translation of vocabulary" and "translation of sentences",and explained how the theory helped the author better deal with the translation difficulties to improve the quality of the translation.This report summarized the information collected before the task began and the analysis of translation difficulties,and examined the application of the theory of "Faithfulness,Expressiveness,Closeness".Hopefully,the author can enhance his ability and proficiency in translation through the analysis of the translation theory and his own translation practice. |
